Gaza is teaching us painful lessons about Europe and the world

What is happening in Gaza will not stay in Gaza.

Israel’s almost 22-month-long genocidal assault on Gaza is reshaping the world in ways we may never fully acknowledge and comprehend.

UN secretary-general António Guterres has called Gaza a “moral crisis that challenges the global conscience.” He is right. But it is more than that. 

International indifference, inaction and lack of compassion — and, in many cases complicity — have allowed Israel to turn Gaza into a graveyard of Palestinian life.

Too many people have looked the other way, as Israeli forces have relentlessly bombed Gaza, engaged in ruthless targeted assassinations, mass displacement, weaponised starvation and much more.

The number of Palestinians killed in Gaza by Israel following the 7 October Hamas attack is nearing 60,000. Israeli military operations and Jewish settler violence in the West Bank are forcing thousands from their homes.

The trauma of these dark months will linger on among generations of Palestinians.
